John Brown & The Night Sky of 1859

Just weeks before abolitionist John Brown’s electrifying raid on Harpers Ferry, the dark night sky exploded in a dazzling array of color. Many observers described seeing blood or deep crimson red lights so bright one could read a newspaper by it. Was it an omen of Civil War?

Come learn about the Great Solar Storm of 1859, how people interpreted night sky phenomena, and how writers and poets would come to describe John Brown himself using astronomical imagery.

Join us on October, 16th in the Allies for Freedom room on the second floor of the John Brown Museum in historic Harpers Ferry.
